Central Calgary shooting sends man to hospital with life-threatening injuries

Police are investigating after shots rang out early Monday morning in the city's northeast, sending a man in his 20s to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A little after 1 a.m., police were called to Crescent Heights after several residents reported hearing gunshots in the area, said Det. Andy Nguyen.

After a brief search by both police and area residents, the seriously injured victim was found bleeding into the snow in an alley near the intersection of 1 St. and 12 Ave. N.E., suffering multiple gunshot wounds.

Attended to by paramedics, he was rushed to Foothills hospital in serious, life-threatening condition.

Police were quick to contain the scene of the shooting.

Assisted by HAWCS, officers scoured the neighbourhood for evidence, using flashlights and police dogs to search pitch-black alleys and backyards.

Nguyen said the victim, who was conscious and awake when he was found, was less than forthcoming with police about the circumstances of the shooting.

"He was uncooperative at the time he was being transported," he said.

While investigators have yet to determine a motive or identify any suspects, police do not believe the shooting to be random.

Anybody with information is asked to call the Calgary police non-emergency line at 403-266-1234, or make an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
