WestJet unveils new Disney Frozen-themed airplane
It’s a plane that’ll certainly prove a challenge on the de-icing pad.
Calgary-based airline WestJet unveiled their newest custom-painted aircraft Sunday, inspired by the hit Disney animated film Frozen.
Toiling in a Fort Worth, Tx. hangar for 21 days straight, teams of painters and artists worked gruelling 12-hour shifts to magically transform a six-year-old Boeing 737-800 into a striking piece of aviation artistry.
Arriving under the cover of darkness at Toronto’s Pearson Airport Saturday night, the plane was officially unveiled Sunday morning.
The plane features characters Anna and Elsa casting snowy magic from the aircraft’s tail towards the nose, where Olaf the sun-loving snowman is depicted relaxing on a warm, Florida beach.
The plane’s interior also got a makeover, featuring decals and headrest covers that follow the exterior’s cold-to-warm theme.
A post on WestJet’s blog said it took 642.5 litres of sparkle-infused paint to complete the project — twice the amount of a regular airplane paint job.
According to a flight plan filed by WestJet, the plane’s maiden voyage will be on the airline’s daily Toronto to Orlando route, set to depart Monday morning at 10:45 a.m. eastern.
The obvious frosty-cold to sunny-warmth theme aside, the aircraft will see regular use across WestJet’s entire network.
This is the second Disney-themed aircraft to join WestJet’s fleet. Unveiled in 2013, WestJet’s “Magic” plane features Sorcerer Mickey from the 1940 Disney classic Fantasia.
